Tech: Apple Hates Independent Repair Shops

Lars Poulsen - 2023-06-19

After almost 5 years, my iPhone XR showed signs of needing a new battery. After walking past a few phone repair shops in airports on our vacation trip, I decided to do something about it, and dropped into the local GadgetFix shop one morning. They promised it would be done in 30 minutes, and it was.

The shop had told me that

The replacement worked great: The phone can now last well beyong my workday after an overnight charge.

But the warning turns out to be much worse than I expected. I was expecting a one-time notification, which would go away after I read the message, and I also expected that they would drop the "Battery Health Monitoring" feature from the settings app. But it turns out that the red "notification" badge never goes away, and the repair guy acknowledges that he does not know of a way to clear it. That is offensive to me. If I had known that this would happen, I would have held off on the battery replacement until I could get to the Apple store.

I am surprised that this happens, even after Apple was ordered by the government to make genuine apple parts available to the independent stores, so you would not have features disabled after getting a screen repaired at an independent store. Yet I feel powerless to do anything about it.
